It is the novel called Eclipse.  This is the ongoing story of the relationship between Bella Swan – the human, her beloved Edward Cullen – the vampire and Jacob Black – the werewolf.

We first met the main characters Edward Cullen and Bella Swan in the first novel of the collection called simply Twilight.  We discovered that Edward is a vampire and he has fallen unconditionally in love with a mortal.

New Moon – The Ongoing Saga

Bella is now safe but Edward still feels very uneasy about being with her.  This is because he fears that the fact that he is a vampire means that many other vampires will target her and see her as fair game.

Edward makes the decision to break up with Bella just after her birthday which leaves her completely devastated.  He takes away all the gifts and trinkets that she had to remember him by. It is as if he wants to complete erase himself from her life so that it would be as if he never existed in the first place.

This action sends Bella spiraling into a deep and desperate depression.  It is as if she is almost comatose.  She suffers from daily nightmares and there is nothing that can rouse her from this state of melancholy.

We meet a new character in the book and his name is Jacob Black.  We were actually made aware of this person in the first novel of the twilight collection.  He was the guy who initially told Bella all about the old folklore stories that were shared among his people on the reservation.  As a Native American, he explains that his tribe were descended from wolves and that they were enemies of vampires.  He didn’t even believe these stories until he finds himself acting strangely one night.

Jacob is a great help to Bella and assists in easing her pain and loneliness. Naturally he falls in love with her and wants to protect her in any way that he can.

The Main Characters Of The Book

Isabella Swan

Isabella Swan is a girl of 17 who moves to the small town of Forks, Washington to live with her father.  Her mother has recently remarried and is off on the road with the new husband so she chooses to give them their space.

One of the interesting facts about Isabella, or rather Bella, as she likes to be known, is the fact that she tends to injure herself quite a lot due to her clumsy nature.

Edward Cullen

At first it seems that Edward Cullen is like any other teenage boy.  However we soon discover how different he really is.  He is in fact a vampire who was born over a century ago.  He is very good looking so all the girls at school find him attractive although he is somewhat aloof.

When Bella & Edward Meet

The first time that these two characters meet, Edward is very rude to Bella.  He can not get away from her fast enough.  We find out later that there is a distinct reason for his strange reaction to her.

As a vampire, he is attracted to the smell of her and the scent of her blood drives him to distraction.  At first he tries to ignore and avoid Bella but he simply can not.  Once Edward acknowledges his attraction for her, it is reciprocated quite quickly.

The strange but endearing love story unfolds and we learn all about Edward’s past and that of his family.  They are all vampires but have chosen to abstain from drinking blood because they do not want to be the monsters that history has expected us to see them as.

The major turning point in the book is when we find that Bella’s life is in danger and how Edward and his family have to protect her from one particular bad guy vampire who is tracking her down in order to feast on her blood.

There is a lot of great drama to be found in the book and this has been further enhanced in the Twilight, the movie adaptation.
